Two Sets of Blueberry Eyes

wide
with wonder at the world.
I wonder,
when did my wisp of whimsy wane?
When the nightingale whistles
I whisper,
“Wait with me,
without worldly wounds.
Wait
while I watch.
Wait
while I keep you safe.
Wait
until you can weather the worst with wonder, too. Wait.”

Silly Horsey

Silly how the world turns.

Silly how the blame and fault burn

with questions with no answers.

Silly how the dead are silent.

Silly how I write on a coloring page

while my son beside me plays

“silly horsey.”

Silly “how could they?”

Silly “why don’t I?”

Silly mind.

Silly heart.

Silly life.

Silly how old habits come back.

Silly how old wells stay dry.

Silly how long it takes me to pray,

repent and return to my son’s game.

Silly horsey.

READY

THE DRIP OF TAP WATER

FROM THE TIP OF A COMB

DOWN THE NAPE OF MY NECK.

THE SQUIRMING STRUGGLE

AGAINST GENTLE

HANDS DETERMINED TO MAKE ME PRESENTABLE.

AND I WISH–

NO. I MISS THE CARE OF MY MOTHER

GETTING  ME UP AND

MAKING ME READY.

AND MAYBE IF ANOTHER

PERSON COULD BE BOTHERED

TO BRAID MY HAIR WITH TAP WATER

I COULD GET MYSELF UP AND BE READY.

palm sunday

 Zechariah told Israel

how their Messiah would come

riding in on

the foal of a donkey;

saving His people

in conquering glory --

two mountain top moments,

millennia apart.

But Israel was so ready

for glory

they missed their Messiah

even as they sang hosanna

and cut branches for His way.

He taught them.

He cried over them.

He cleaned their temple.

He told them glory was coming.

He told them He would die first.

But Israel was so ready

for glory

they cut themselves off from

their hosannas and

their Messiah and

they cried crucify --

two mountain top moments,

barely a week apart.

Imagine

the true vine

bringing out all the stops,

knowing they'd cut themselves off.

Imagine

his life hanging

in the balance

when Israel tossed

the balance out.

Imagine

knowing Israel's choice

before they made it.

Imagine

crying over them anyway.

Imagine.

Realize we're still

waiting for glory.

Imagine.

And remember

our King.

coffee cup poetry

rhymes on a cup
tiny words to fill up
your soul: brain coffee
so read while you drink
while caffeine sinks
into your system: energy
coffee cup poetry
a cup to you from me,
your barista: brain-coffee-energy-lady
who brews you two hot commodities
please
think with me
about the color blue,
about the shades whispering
through the sky
or reflecting
in her eyes.
think about blue lights
how blue looks cold,
but it belongs in summer
because gray is colder
and it belongs to winter
just like white.
white noise, white space,
we're stuck on one channel in one place,
just quasi-members of the human race.
white noise, white space,
white light from stars
through the night,
eternal night
in the void between galaxies
and here on a rock sits you and sits me
writing poor poetry,
just a blip in the void's memory.
just think with me
about eternity
about infinity
about some piece of humanity
going on endlessly--
now pause.
catch your breath.
the inevitable end
hasn't happened yet
so let's sit down for a pour over coffee
just the void and you and me
and discuss the point of everything
continuing
"there isn't one," says the void
in a voice too much like white noise
"existence is meaningless"
so the void is a nihilist
and the void looks at me
so I say, "it seems like vanity,
true
but what if you
were made to be family
to the maker of infinity
and purpose is found simply
in the harmony
of you
and the God who made blue
and gray
and white
and that makes me sound religious
which makes you and void suspicious
of my agenda
but now the void and I have both shared our coffee thoughts
and the time has come, like it or not
to think
think about blue
think about God
think about you.

update: in this interim period between training and school and life, I'm trying once again to write a book.  we're going for a short story/poetry collection this time. wish me luck.

warm water

warm bed. warm hands.
warm thoughts. warm sand.
warm water; in a glass, not a bath,
no, no ice, it’s plenty nice
just warm.

cold water sweats and
warm water gets cold;
lukewarm is consistent,
doesn’t make my brain freeze
or tongue blister. if you please,
i like my water warm.

cold is refreshing, true,
if it doesn’t crack a tooth
with climate change and
lukewarm won’t cool me down
but i know it can swish around
my mouth with ease.

hot can be cozy, can relax,
until one sip too hot, too fast
and everything tastes like ash for days.
lukewarm won’t warm me through
but it’s safer than being burned to
crispiest crappy you’ve ever seen.

“i’d rather you were either
cold or hot, instead of neither
here nor there.”
and i’m scared
because cold means sweating
and hot means playing
with some kind of heat I
probably can’t handle.

warm bread. warm butter.
warm cookies. warm supper.
warm water;
it’s familiar, not the best
it’s the middle of the rest
i guess
i’m scared of going all in
to find that
cold warms up and hot cools down
and in order to maintain
i have to change,
consistently choosing discomfort.

i like my water warm.

warm breath. warm breeze.
warm coffee.  warm sheets.

but warm life?
warm life...
not cold, not hot,
just meh. maybe not.
